A Clinical Analysis of the Facial Bone Fractures


Abstract
This retrospective study compromise 231 patients with maxillofacial trauma sustained in various accidents and treated in the department of Plastic and reconstructive Surgery at the Kon Kuk University Hospital between September 1989 and March
1992.
the incidence of facial injuries is high because the face is exposed and there is little protective covering. Prompt treatment of facial fractures maximizes functional and aesthetic results and makes patients more rapidly returning to active and
productive roles in society.
the medical records of 231 patients(265 fractures) were reviewed and analyzed in order to obtain the clinical pattern and to understand the therapeutic tendency.
@ES The following results were obtained.
1) The incidence was the highest at April and September between 6:00 p.m. and midnight.
2) Most of the injuries occured in young male with the hihgest incidence in the third-decade age group. Male predominated than female, 3. 91:1 .
3) The most common etiology was motor vehicle accidents followed by violences, falls and industrial accidents.
4) A total of 265 classified facial fractures were diagnosed in the 231 patients. The most common fractures were found in the nose followed by mandible, zygoma, orbital rim and maxilla.
5) facial and scalp lacerations were the most common accompanying injury followed by teeth injury.
6) Open reduction was done for 59.6% of total cases and others treated with closed reduction and conservate management.
7) The complication rate was 9.5% and the ophthalmologic problems were the most common.
